Saratoga opens

By Tom Joyce

Saratoga opens its 140th season of racing on Wednesday, and I’m looking forward to it.

Considering that I am practically illiterate when it comes to computers, it’s no less than a miracle that I have been able to get this up and running. My intent is to offer you, dear reader, some of my observations and opinions on the racing scene.

To get things started, I’m going to blog about Saratoga’s SHOWdown contest, which I think is the best handicapping contest there is. I have made 12 entries under the names MidwayStar, SadieBug and Sainfoin.

MidwayStar is for a filly I named while living on a horse farm in Midway, Kentucky. SadieBug is for my beloved ex-dog. Sainfoin is for the 1890 Epsom Derby winner. Feel free to root for or against.

I also plan to offer handicapping insights and, on most days, a spot play or two.

I am a life-long handicapper and my past includes working for The Jockey Club, Daily Racing Form and Bloodstock Research Information Services.

My goal is to offer an interesting and informative daily journal.
